Jean
Anyon essay
Merit.
According to the online definition of merit, this means “the quality of being
good or worthy” (www.dictionary.com).
In 1979, Jean Anyon, a writer at Rutgers University wrote an essay explaining
the different types of jobs, and behaviors in the classroom that correlated
with the social classes. She surveyed classrooms and observed the students,
teachers, principals, etc. to gather data. She concluded that the working class
people were in poverty and their behavior in the classroom was just to listen to
the teacher and not to ask questions. They were given steps to get the right answer
but they didn’t know how they got to that final answer. She also said that the
middle class didn’t know what they were doing or why they were doing it but
they listened to the teacher and got their work done. The middle class peoples
job were people who got paid for their labor. I, personally think that this
essay doesn’t hold merit anymore. Considering the fact that this essay was
written years ago, her point doesn’t stand strong now. In my own experiences, there
are a mixture of working class and middle class people in public and private
schools these days. Generally in high school, we are taught to be prepared for
college. They teach students one way, no one asks questions and all we do is
copy what’s on the board and we listen to what our teacher says. Also, with the
jobs, I know people who come from struggles and rock bottom experiences that
are now rising to the top. No job specifically defines where you came from.
This essay may have been right when she wrote it years ago but today’s world
has changed indefinitely and I don’t think that this essay holds merit.

We have the right to use our own language.

My langauge
"Okay class, you have an assignment this weekend." says my professor. "For the assignment, you will have to complete a getting to know me page on your blog. This is your chance for me to get to know you as a student and person. There are no rules but to keep the post appropriate for an academic setting. Enjoy your weekend." Hearing this from the class, everyone was excited. There were no rules and for once, our professor was giving us a chance to expose the real us. A lot of questions would float around in my mind especially the question of, "How does my teacher want this essay?" She didn't mention anything about proper use of langauge or MLA format so I'm going to write this post how I want it. After all, it is my post. "We affirm strongly that teachers must have the experiences and training that will enable them to respect diversity and uphold the right of students to their own language." This is saying that us, the students have the right to use our own language when we are in our English classes. Whether it's our first or second langauge, slang or code, we have the right to express ourselves how we want. In our english class, mainly we are taught how to write and what to write in a formal response. For once, I agree that students should be able to express themselves in different ways. We should be able to respect diversity among the class and share each of our intelligence's within each other. We should be able to develop different ideas and different ways of writing. We shouldn't be limited to the uniformed style of writing.

What is identity to me?

Identity
What is identity to me? Identity is how someone is able to tell
who I am, without me saying
much or
doing much. The people I surround myself by, how I act and how I
speak can play a big part
on
how people can remember me and identify me. My identity is who I am and nothing
else. It is
how
you can separate me from the rest of society. In the essay of Gloria
Anzadula, she describes
how
people are trying to rid her of her original langauge. She believes
that langauge isn't something
that
you just speak but it plays a role in what your identity is and how people see
you. In the essay
it
states, "if you want to be American, speak 'American.' If you don't like
it, go back to Mexico
where
you belong." I think that isn't fair how they based her off what langauge
she spoke. A lot of
people
are bilingual and just learn separate languages. Also, American isn't
said to have just one
set
langauge so I didn't think it was fair that she was told to "speak
American.". How can one, "speak
American"?
She stood strong and told them that she wasn't going to change for anyone
because that's
how
she wanted people to recognize her by. I mainly speak English but when I'm
around my parents
and
family, I'm able to communicate with them with my culture's langauge. I
want people to
remember
me by how I talk and not how I talk, if that makes sense. I want people to know
that I was
raised
and brought up by my family in a positive and intelligent upbringing. I don't
want people to
judge
my identity by people that I hang out with, or how I dress, etc. I want to be
my own person
and
I think that I am a very imporant role into finding out who my identity
is.

"How to tame a wild tongue"
1. The opening scene of Anzaldua in the dentist's char connects to the overall point of the essay because she's basically explaining what is happening to her. It show's that she's in the chair and the dentist doesn't know what to do with her tongue because it keeps touching the wads of cotton and it is always moving in her mouth. "The dentist is cleaning out my roots", this relates to the story because they're telling the main character that she isn't allowed to speak her language in certain places. They're trying to tell her that she can only speak English and the "Chicano" language she speaks isn't the right language
2. Anzaldua's use of Spanish between the story was very informative. She was explaining what specific phrases or words meant in Spanish. She was speaking the story about how her how she was talking to her mother and then she translated it into her language. In her culture and language, certain words were derogatory to men and some were to women. It wasn't confusing at all because she would foreshadow the translation before she said it. Her purpose was to prove that she didn't need to be robbed of her own language. She could speak both languages without being told that it was "wrong."
3. American english can be defined as standard Spanish and chicane Spanish can be described as nonstandard. Why? Because standard english and Spanish is something everyone is very common with. If you ask someone if they speak Chicano Spanish, it's more than likely that no one relates with the language so that's why it's nonstandard.
4. The necessity of speaking and/writing in Academic English is very important. It is very needed because people use it to communicate. Most people in this world, their first language is English. For them it's easy to read and write in English so in order to communicate with everyone else, they must know English.
5.Their are a lot of different types of "English" or should I say different types of how people speak it. There's proper english and there is slang english. I use both, I use slang when I'm with my friends or people around my age and I use "proper english" for people who are older than me or higher people than me like my manager, or my older siblings.
6. I use a secret lanague to communicate with my friends, especially my twin sister. When me and my sister are around a bunch of people and someone says something strange around us, we tend to glance at each other signaling that we both just heard something weird. We also text each other small words.
7.The form of english that I speak when I'm with my friends are slang english. We all have a different type of language outside of proper english that we use to understand each other. People that are older than us tend to ask why we talk that way. The form of english that I use when I talk to my mother is proper english. Because she is responsible for my life, I talk to her like I should properly and not like she is one of my friends from school.
8."I am my language." This means this is how I communicate with the outside world. This is who I identify myself with. This is correct. For me, I tend to remember people from how they talk. If they're talking out of the language that I know, then I remember it. With language, you can tell where the person is from, what type of person they are and how they revolve around their language.
9. The introduction and the conclusion of this story connects greatly. The narrator mostly speaks about how people were trying to rid her of her accent or her language. She often questioned why she would have to do it and she told other people what she was going through. Towards the end of the story, she shows that shes strong with her language and she know's no one will change that even if they try harder. She goes from questioning to confidence.
10. Language can be apart of your identity. It's how people can choose a way to remember you. Also, people can judge you off the way you talk. If you talk in a language that isn't clear or precise or people really don't understand how you talk, they'll remember that. If you talk properly and have a sense of knowledge, people will also remember that too.
11. Identity is very important to me. I want people to remember me in a positive way. I would hate for people to remember me badly because of how I talk. Anazaldua thinks it's important to have identity because in the story she says, "We know how to survive. When other races have given up their tongue, we've kept ours. We know what it is to live under the hammer blow of the dominant culture..." She is basically staying strong about the langauge she speaks. She wants people to identify her as having a strong language and not always settling because someone wants her too.

Getting to know me.
I can't remember what we were looking at but I do remember why I'm writing this post. My name is Wande Adeyemo. Well, wande for short. People call me "baby Durant" cause I'm obsessed with Kevin Durant or "wawa" or "puppy" like my sister calls me because she thinks all I do is follow her around -_- I'm 17 years old and I graduated from Piscataway High School. I was so relieved when they called my name to walk across the stage... I was finally out of school and on my way to a different one. Irony. I play basketball, I used to play soccer but that didn't work out well for me and my sister. I've been playing basketball since like the 2nd grade. We had little teams back then and me and my sister were always eager to be apart of the basketball team. Ever since then, we join teams, we joined a travel team and now we're here to be apart of the women's basketball.

What am I passionate about? It would have to be basketball and achieving my dreams to become a criminal profiler. Growing up, my mom and my older sister would always tell me that I'm always watching "criminal" shows or investigation shows and I really grew to love them all. In my free time, me and my sister listen to club music inside of our dorms and have a two people party. When I have a lot of free time, I usually sleep or eat or think of food. I'm usually always eating 24/7. I like cheeseburgers, fries, chicken tenders, pizza, turkey and cheese sandwiches, radishes, broccoli and cauliflower. LOL
While I'm writing at a computer, I let the words flow as i type. If there's no certain way that I have to go by, I can type forever. if not, I always tend to plan and think out loud and write down my thoughts. But something like this, I'm sitting down on my computer and I'm writing down all the words that are coming through my head. Chicken
I listen to club music 24/7 or I listen to draking, emotional, sad, tearing music. There's not really an in between. My favorite artists would have to be Drake and J.Cole. Otherwise, all my other favorite artists are dj's that make jersey club music. All of my friends know that all I listen to is club music cause im always posting the new song that I find on sound-cloud. Speaking of soundcloud, I mainly use snapchat, twitter, Instagram, YouTube, sound cloud, posh-mark, eBay, pinterest and tumblr. I use the apps like 2958249 times a day and I never get tired. boom
My writing experience in high school was bad for me. I found during my sophomore year or so that I wasn't as a good writer as I thought i was. Our teachers didn't really care for reading our essays, they just wanted it done. Some teachers cared and others just did the minimal. I didn't have to write a lot of drafts in high school and I found myself just writing papers. I learned certain grammar rules like the use of commas and mla format and structure. I did learn about the five paragraph structure and learned that it might not apply in college. in general, the most important thing for me to learn is how to become closer to my degree. For English, I hope to become a better writer in all ways. I would rate myself a C as a writer. Why? I know the basics but I know I'm not at the level as my other peers. Sometimes when I peer revise for my friends, I realize how far back I am. I should've taken my English classes a little more seriously.
